Thomson Fly, the British low fare airline which established Coventry Airport as a no-frills departure point for UK low cost travellers will abandon its original airbase on November 2nd.

Now one of the UK's largest scheduled low cost carriers, Thomson Fly initially started in March 2004 flying a small number of routes only from Coventry Airport.

As the carrier expanded, it then introduced low cost routes from Doncaster Sheffield and Bournemouth - two more virtually unknown British airports, not-yet served at that point by other low cost airlines.

End of an era?

It appears from the BBC news article that before deciding to abandon its West-Midlands airbase, Thomson Fly actually wanted to turn Coventry into a serious hub with

a passenger terminal capable of handling two million passengers a year

Given that Birmingham International is so close, I'm inclined to think that the High Court was correct to block the plan. Surely, it makes more sense for a no-frills low cost terminal to be established at BHX, obviating the need to create two large-scale airports in the UK West Midlands?
