The English Channel's pioneering low cost car ferry service, Speedferries has collapsed.

The ferry service which charged as little as GBP 24 to ferry one car and five passengers one-way from Dover in the UK to Boulogne in France (and as little as GBP 29 for a same-day round-trip) is now looking to be bought up as a going concern.

The firm ran into difficulties last Thursday when the Boulogne Port Authority seized its only vessel, SpeedOne, in a dispute over unpaid taxes and fees.

Talks were held between the two sides to try to resolve the impasse but it has been announced the company has been placed in administration at the request of the firm's directors.
