Thai low cost carrier (LCC) One-Two-Go Airlines may suspend operations.

Founder Udom Tantiprasongchai is reported in the Bangkok Post as saying: “I'm not lying to myself about the reality of the situation, a painful decision needs to be made”.

Udom said domestic fares need to go up by 30 per cent and fuel surcharges increase to better reflect costs.

Nice thread title.

Unless the oil price comes down again, I'm beginning to think that before the end of this year we might finally see O'Leary's long-predicted bloodbath.

The storm this winter could make the first two weeks of April, when Aloha Airlines, ATA, Skybus and Oasis Hong Kong all declared bankruptcy and Frontier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection look like a slight squall.

Full service and no-frills carriers alike, I think the veil is going to be lifted on which airlines have their costs under control and a robust operations strategy in place and which do not.

And One-Two Go is gone - at least temporarily:

Quote:
Low-cost carrier One-Two-Go will suspend its operations from July 22 to September 15, making it the first airline victim of record oil prices.

(story here)

Unless there's a dramatic drop in oil prices by mid-sept, I'd guess the chances of the airline reopening are miniscule.

And I'm not sure it's a great loss. One-Two go already has 90 fatalities to its name, a reportedly clapped-out fleet & management that can, straight-faced, say things like:
Quote:
One Two Go had been operating based on actual costs while other players had different strategies.
Erm, would those be hedging their fuel costs, directly related to oil prices, which are extremely volatile?

This LCC will not be widely mourned, I suspect.
