This is great news from Wizz Air - really exciting!
For me, the direct, no-frills flights to L'viv are even more significant than the direct budget flights to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Until now - with the single exception of On Air, the Italian low cost carrier which flies direct to L'viv from both Pescara and Bologna - affordable one-way flights from Western Europe to Western Ukraine have been extremely scarce.
Previously available options have involved compiling air + overland itineraries, all of which entailed time-consuming border-crossings.
Reaching the Galician city of L'viv - arguably Ukraine's second city - has been anything but straightforward from the UK, usually involving a Ryanair flight to the Polish town of Rszezow, or else a low fare flight to Krakow on some other carrier (such as British Airways or easyJet) and then a long and inconvenient train journey.
When trying to reach the city of Uzhhorod in Transcarpathia (the part of Western Ukraine south of the Carpathians which borders on Slovakia and Hungary), the only option to date has been to fly on Sky Europe to Kosice in Eastern Slovakia or else on one of many European budget airlines operating low cost flights to Budapest and then to seek overland connections on the ground.
A direct, no-frills flight to L'viv followed by a domestic Ukrainian coach connection south to Uzhhorod will likely represent a much easier, quicker and cheaper journey overall.
In summary, these new routes from Wizz Air mean that - for many Brits and Germans at least - Western Ukraine is no longer unaffordably remote. |
