|
|
Discussions ranged back and forth for nearly a quarter of a year, but at the start of this week, leading Spanish low cost airlines Vueling (an independent carrier) and Clickair (the budget airline subsidiary of Spanish flag-carrier Iberia) finally agreed to merge.
The merged company will, despite a majority shareholding by Iberia, continue to operate under the name Vueling.

Not the first merger we'll see this year, I'll wager.
Possible consolidation scenarios:
1) I can see Centralwings being absorbed into either Sky Europe or Wizz Air.
2) We might witness a merger of Volare Web and MyAir in Italy.
3) It's not totally out of the question that there might be a grand unification between Scandinavian low cost giants Sterling and Norwegian.
I'm sure there are many other possible scenarios - for any low cost airline under pressure from oil prices, I imagine that getting bought out is going to be a preferable option to going bust. |

And that's beginning! According to this article (sorry, it's in french only), Sterling and Norwegian will start code-sharing for a few routes.
I don't know if I'm right, but I think this is the first code share agreement beetween LLC. Anyway, it might be the begining of a stronger union. |
