AirAsia will start charging for checked baggage from April 21. It's around $1.50 per bag, but if you pre-book by calling their call centre you can save a massive 40%, or around 50c, less however much the phone call costs and how much your time is worth.
This doesn't really bother me as I usually just take hand luggage on short haul flights, but I'd prefer it if you could just select it and pay whilst booking the ticket rather than mess around paying at the counter or contacting their call centre.

flybe and Ryanair in the UK were the first low cost airlines to introduce the concept of checked baggage as a "paid frill" back in 2006.
The concept appears to be becoming standard, rapidly.
Don't be surprised if you hear a similar announcement from Singapore-based Tiger Airways sometime soon... _________________ Alan Lansdowne

You're right. This idea of having to phone up a call centre is nonsense. All the other low cost carriers allow you to select your checked baggage options during the online booking process. _________________ Alan Lansdowne
