Are you just planning to fly one-way? When are you intending to fly? _________________ Alan Lansdowne

Hi Alan
I want to fly one way only, and plan to leave Berlin end of July (there's a flight on 31st July!). |

Okay, I'll be honest, this is the trickiest one I've seen for a long time.
Right now no low fare airlines (ie. airlines with transparent pricing) fly to Mongolia from anywhere.
As far as I can see Lufthansa doesn't fly to Mongolia either.
So - from Germany, at least - MIAT doesn't have much competition.
You have your departure point (Berlin), your destination point (Ulan Bator) and your desired date of travel (July 31st).
So... forgive me if I'm being naive, but isn't MIAT just going to charge you whatever it likes? _________________ Alan Lansdowne

Have you considered something like getting a low cost flight from Berlin to Moscow and then catching the train to Ulan Bator?
If you have the time to make the train journey, this alternative would, I'm certain, come out a lot cheaper than flying direct from Berlin to Ulan Bator (even factoring in the cost of the Russian visa). _________________ Alan Lansdowne

You're absolutely right, MIAT has no competition, so can charge what they like. But it seems that their pricing is not so transparent, and prices obtained in Mongolia can be 35-40% less than those obtained in Europe. I have now got what I think is the cheapest I'm likely to get. Actually, only 5 airlines fly to Mongolia from anywhere, so the chances of really cheap flights in the forseeable future are practically nil.
PS: Discounted the rail journey due to time constraints. |

Only five?! In that case, yes, I agree with your prognosis, pretty much.
At present Air Baltic offers competitive one-way fares from lots of Western European cities to one or two destinations in Central Asia, namely:
1) Almaty in Kazakhstan
2) Tashkent in Uzbekistan
and though Ulan Bator is still quite a long way east of Almaty there's an outside chance that Air Baltic could introduce flights to the Mongolian capital from Riga at some point. _________________ Alan Lansdowne

Chances of that are practically nil, at least in the nearest future. There are pretty strong economic ties between Riga and ex-Soviet republics. Not so with Mongolia.
I suggest you either:
- contact AEROFLOT in Germany (their website shows a return fare from Berlin of 730 EUR - yet you cannot book the flights online);
- travel via London: I found an all-inclusive Korean Air fare of 645 GBP for London-Seoul-Ulaanbaatar and return, see www.koreanair.com/eu/eng/
Edit Reason: Link updated. Please, if you're recommending a specific carrier, then link to that carrier, not to a third-party booking engine. Thanks for your understanding.
