Okay, well, as you've probably guessed, it's a better idea to look for a low cost apartment once you're on the ground in Italy rather than trying to book one in advance before you arrive. (Otherwise you won't have a clear idea of what you're going to end up with).

So for the first couple of days, you'll need an affordable and convenient hostel to base yourself out of, while you find some longer-term accommodation.

Here's a comprehensive and useful list of hostels in Italy to get you started:

Are you planning a Working Holiday?

If so, you might find this information from the Academic Affairs section of the Embassy of Canada in Rome useful:

Working Holiday programme between Canada and Italy

The page was last updated on February 27th, 2008, so I think the information is fairly current.

Hang on a second... my mistake - that's the page for Italians who wish to apply for a Working Holiday visa to allow them to live and work in Canada.

Here's the corresponding page from the Italian Embassy in Ottawa for Canadian citizens who want to live and work in Italy:

Working Holiday Program between Canada and Italy
