We've had a couple of discussions here in the past about how it is becoming cheaper for budget travellers to organise their own RTW itineraries by booking flights on individual low cost airlines rather than paying a premium (though, admittedly, it was once a great money-saver) for the Round-the-World tickets long offered by travel agents and the flag-carrier alliances.
The trickiest part of organising your own RTW trip is tackling the inter-regional bottlenecks which tend to crop up as a result of the slim selection of low cost routes between: Europe and the Middle East, the Middle East and South Asia, South Asia and South East Asia, South East Asia and East Asia, East Asia and Australasia, Australasia and the Americas and between the Americas and Europe.
Low cost carriers are gradually introducing a wider selection of interregional low fare routes however.
I noted with interest the other day that Jazeera Airways is now flying to the Maldives from both Kuwait and Dubai.
Given that Mihin Lanka also flies to the Maldives, this opens up previously unexplored options such as:
Cyprus - Kuwait - Maldives - Sri Lanka on Jazeera Airways and Mihin Lanka.
where previously, if you wanted to fly to Sri Lanka without going to India, you would have been stuck with:
Istanbul - Sharjah - Sri Lanka on Air Arabia. _________________ Alan Lansdowne
